I am hoping there are others out there who could recomend some organizations doing sustainable education and earth works. I would like to work with children and educate about the most valuable info. Living on Earth. I am an aspiring teacher and I don't want to wait to graduate to work with kids ( I graduate in 3 or 4 years.) This seems too important to delay. Any recomendations would be appreciated!

Re: Who Is educting Kids NOW?
Mon, January 29, 2007 - 8:53 PMi worked for americorps, but it really depends on what programs they run now in your area. i worked with their watershed project which ran school gardens, field trips, classroom projects and lessons, and really anything that you were excited about. we taught all ages of children, learned ourselves, and made $5000 a year, besides income, toward school. a government project, but it had a lot to offer.
i teach in the classroom now, but i dream of doing the work we did in environmental education. hopefully again soon... have fun!

Mon, February 12, 2007 - 2:48 PMI am working for a bird protecting society in Germany (called LBV = Landesbund für Vogelschutz in Bayern, which is a NABU partner) See www.lbv-muenchen.de
There are many different possibilities in each country, you just have to find out and start as soon as possible.....
Good luck! -

Re: Who Is educting Kids NOW?
Thu, February 15, 2007 - 9:26 PMOne suggestion that I have (if it is an option for you) is to travel to a developing nation in order to do this work. The need for such education is great and credentials are rarely required. If travel isn't feasible for you just start something up yourself. Talk to a school about voluteering to build gardens, or painting an eco-themed mural, etc. There are so many ways to go about this (especially if you aren't looking to get paid). Go for it! Have fun.
Blessings from indonesia,

Re: Who Is educting Kids NOW?
Tue, March 6, 2007 - 8:26 PMI work for Outward Bound, taking teens on month long wilderness trips. We do environmental ed, and also teach the importance of community and service. I think that restoring our sense of community is critical to solving our environmental problems. -

Re: Who Is educting Kids NOW?
Wed, September 26, 2007 - 9:45 PMThe Kokua Foundation in Hawaii (begun by singer songwriter Jack Johnson and his wife) has a garden-in-schools program, as well as recycling programs and funding for classes wanting to participate in environmentally friendly projects. Lifeschool/Go Adventure Program out of Northern California takes teens on all types of outdoor adventures, including Alaska and Hawaii. Their focus is on safe fun, outdoor skills, environmental responsibility and personal development. -

Re: Who Is educting Kids NOW?
Thu, October 4, 2007 - 1:56 PMWow! I really like Kokua's approach. I'm going to download that movie they are going to show, and try to show it here at Sacred Heart. This week I have been giving a presentation on ecological awareness to all of my students. I've just taught them all how to use presentation software, and they all give presentations next week, and I figured I could kill 2 birds at once by showing them proper presentation etiquette and exposing them to a good, long presentation on ecological awareness, and the 4 R's I tell them: reduce, reuse, recycle, and...repair. I'll be bookmarking that site. Thank you so much for bringing it to mind. If I leave here, and move back to Hawaii, I'm going to check them out. Peace out,
-MM

Sat, August 11, 2007 - 3:54 AMAwesome!
I am so happy to be writing this email :)
I just switched jobs myself, and will be working as a naturalist with Camp Green Meadows near Yosemite National Park, so I've been doing some major webhunting and it's still fresh in my mind...
First, though, you MUST hurry to get your resume out there because the season starts soon and a lot of people have already done their hiring for the year. So move quick like bunny :)
the most comprehensive is the job feed here:
www.outdoored.com
and other good resources:
aeoe.org/jobs
natsap.org/jobsearch/
www.natwc.org/
www.ncstaff.net/oed/Outdoo...sources.htm
Also, a lot of these positions want you to have Wilderness FIrst Responder training and/or Wilderness First Aid; if you need recommendations or links to these certifications, let me know & I'll pass those on too...
Actually, one last thing: I think you sound young enough that you might still be able to work with SCA (Student Conservation Association). They might rock your world too!
Hope this helps-

Re: Who Is educating Kids NOW?
Sun, September 23, 2007 - 9:07 PMi work with children in special education. i am also a conservationist. it is troublesome as the two don't jive sometimes. to become a full time teacher yah have to sacrifice some values, or at least "shelve" some - until you are able to groom your curriculum to access those values that you deem important. the government is getting there - but hampers you by creating a bar for all to get over. environmental ed. is a mere unit or two amongst the other hurdles that constitute the grade.
be patient, treasure those hopes and dreams, until you get into a position where you can unleash them.
i wish you well

Re: Who Is educting Kids NOW?
Fri, January 25, 2008 - 4:04 PMGreetings,
My name is Linda and I am Martin's partner. I just read your post and felt moved to respond NOW! We have a program that is just what you speak of. It is called SunFlower Sam and it is to bring to 6th grade level children the awareness of micro-gardening and how easy it is to compost and have a full cycle garden. Check out our web site and let me know of your ideas. www.sunflowersam.org
Thanks,
Rev. Linda Lamb
